Every summer, something happens that most classrooms spend the entire following year trying to undo.
Decades of research confirm it: students lose roughly one to two months of reading and math skills over summer break. And unlike a single semester of catching up, these losses are cumulative — they compound year after year.
For PreK–2 students, the timing could not be more consequential. These are the years when foundational literacy, number sense, and self-regulation are being built for the first time. A child who starts kindergarten or first grade behind rarely closes that gap without targeted intervention — and every unengaged summer widens it further.
This isn't a new problem for educators and program leaders. What's changed is the growing body of evidence pointing to a specific, scalable solution: music- and movement-based learning.
At Mind Meets Music, we built our platform around a simple, research-backed idea — that rhythm, singing, and movement aren't "fun extras" tacked onto instruction. They're tools that activate multiple areas of the brain simultaneously: auditory processing, motor coordination, memory, and language centers all engage together. That kind of multi-sensory engagement strengthens exactly the neural pathways that summer break puts most at risk.
A federally funded, quasi-experimental study behind our approach found a 12.1-point literacy gain in Year 1, a 69% reduction in the achievement gap by Year 2, and a 52% improvement in math performance sustained over three years.
What makes this especially relevant for out-of-school-time programs, camps, and families is that this kind of engagement doesn't require a classroom, a device for the child, or a trained specialist. It travels. A teacher, camp counselor, or parent can press play on a video lesson with no musical training, special equipment, or lesson prep required — and the learning keeps happening, wherever the child happens to be that day.
Summer learning loss has historically felt like an intractable problem — too big, too structural, too expensive to solve at scale. The research suggests otherwise.
